Statement by NAPCS President and CEO Nelson Smith on Election of Sen. Barack Obama as President
Washington, DC. – National Alliance for Public Charter Schools President and CEO Nelson Smith released the following statement congratulating Senator Barack Obama on being elected the 44th President of the United States of America:
On behalf of the over 4,600 public charter schools across the country educating more than 1.4 million children, the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools congratulates President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden.
Over the course of his campaign, President-elect Obama stressed accountability and choice in public education, especially through the expansion of high-quality public charter schools. He stated last night we must “open doors of opportunity for our kids” and said there are “new schools to build.” His bold proposal to double federal funding for public charter schools signals his strong commitment to making high-quality public school options available to families who need them most.
While there are many critical issues facing President-elect Obama, we hope that improving our nation’s public education system remains an urgent priority; it is the key to progress in all other areas. We know the President-elect will surround himself with the most capable education reform minds in the country, regardless of party, and we look forward to working with them to improve our nation’s public education system.
The Obama campaign has energized huge numbers of Americans and generated a fresh sense of optimism, sorely needed in this difficult time at home and abroad. For the millions of children around the country struggling to climb the mountain to college, Senator Obama’s own personal story is a shining example.
We congratulate the President-elect and look forward to four years of collaboration on behalf of America’s young people.
